Ezra Jack Keats,
A Biography will Illustrations
by Dean Engel and
Florence B. Freedman
Ezra Jack Keats began drawing and painting at the age of four, back
in the days when he was still known as Jack Ezra Katz. He later discovered
the benefits of his artistic endeavors, especially during the
1930's when art served as comfort, relief, and even escape for a boy whose family
was hard hit by the Depression. It was during these years that Keats's abilities
earned him the respect of the tougher kids in his Brooklyn
neighborhood.
His entire life and career are chronicled in Ezra Jack Keats: A
Biography with Illustrations. His early years struggling as an inker
for Five-Star Comics right up through his days as an award-winning author and
illustrator are told with an understanding that could only be conveyed
by those who knew him well. Dean Engel and Florence Freedman were friends
with Keats for much of his life. The story is enhanced by 18 pieces of Keats's
original work.
